“Words Set Free is more than a programme”
—it is a movement that transforms lives through the healing power of narrative therapy, creative writing, and theatre.
Founded by Dr. Suzette Leal, an expert in communication studies and a passionate advocate for restorative justice, the programme is rooted in the belief that stories have the ability to heal, connect, and redefine personal identity.
Operating primarily in Pollsmoor Correctional Facility, Words Set Free provides a structured yet deeply personal space where participants – many of whom have experienced profound trauma – can explore their own narratives, express emotions, and develop essential communication skills.
Through writing workshops, guided storytelling, and therapeutic engagement, this initiative offers an opportunity for reflection, self-awareness, and personal growth.
Words Set Free is more than just a writing programme; it is a bridge between isolation and expression, between past pain and future possibility. By fostering a sense of agency and dignity through the written word, it encourages participants to reimagine their identities beyond their incarceration.
Dr. Suzette Leal is a qualitative researcher, narrative therapist, and communication specialist with a deep commitment to working with vulnerable communities. Holding a PhD in Communication Studies, her work focuses on the intersection of storytelling, trauma, and rehabilitation. She has years of experience working in informal settlements and high-risk environments, using narrative therapy as a tool for healing and empowerment.
Her work at Pollsmoor Correctional Facility has provided an avenue for incarcerated individuals to reclaim their voices through structured creative expression. In addition to leading Words Set Free, she is passionate about expanding narrative therapy to other trauma-affected communities, including post-conflict areas and organisations working with ex-child soldiers. She is also developing a theatre project that translates the themes and stories from her workshops into live performance, offering both catharsis and public awareness of the complexities of life behind bars.
Dr. Suzette Leal envisions a world where storytelling is recognised as a powerful tool for change, and where those who have been silenced are given the space to speak, to be heard, and to heal.
